Angelo is the Director of the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences, where he oversees Alabama’s nationally recognized crime laboratory system. The Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences is the State’s only internationally accredited provider of forensic laboratory services, and conducts forensic testing in the areas of DNA, toxicology, drug chemistry, firearms and toolmarks, and death investigation.

Angelo received his Bachelor’s degree in chemistry from the University of Toronto in Toronto, Canada, and his Graduate degree in Forensic Science from the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

He was the recipient of an Alabama Supreme Court Justice Scholarship for Graduate Studies in Forensic Science, the Dean’s Award from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and the Significant Contribution to the Forensic Sciences Award from the Southern Association of Forensic Sciences.

He has published his DNA research findings in the Journal of Forensic Sciences and has been an invited speaker at several national forensic science conferences.

Over the course of his 33+ year career, Angelo has testified as an expert witness in both State and Federal Courts and provided testimony to the United States Congress at a hearing focused on the future of Forensic DNA testing.

Angelo served as an Executive Board Member on the FBI’s Scientific Working Group on DNA Analysis Methods (SWGDAM), as well as the US Department of Justice’s Forensic Science Working Group, which are both responsible for evaluating new technologies in Forensic Science, and creating the Quality Assurance Standards for the Forensic Science community.

Angelo has also been featured on The Discovery Channel Documentary Series “The New Detectives”, as well as CBS News’ “60 Minutes” Program, in their episode focused on the future of forensic DNA testing.
